1. Be conversant with the laws of the game. So many bowlers are not. 2. Good sportsmanship in bowls is simply the practice of good old-fashioned etiquette. 3. Start and finish by shaking your opponent's hand. 4. Commend good bowls played by your opponents or teammates. 5. Admit a fluke [lucky wick]. 6. Be a gracious winner and a good loser. 7. Dress as the competition or club rules require. 8. When a player is on the mat, that player or side has possession of the rink. NEVER, EVER, DISTRACT YOUR OPPONENT. Keep behind out of sight at the mat. Stand well back and to one side of the head to allow the player on the mat a clear view. 9. If you follow a bowl after delivery, do not obstruct your opponent’s view. 10. Never criticise members performance after the game. 11. Never let your opponent think he has you rattled, by appearing serene. 12. Play the game at your pace not that of your opponent. 13. Never criticise the playing state of the green, instead protect it by not bouncing or dropping your bowls on it. 14. When you are playing a team game play to the wishes of the skip. Players playing their own game will never be successful. 15. When playing lead or second in a four, encourage your third and skip. They are in control and other players should keep well back and not interfere. 16. Leave the thirds to decide the score at the finish of an end. The player conceding shots removes the scoring bowls from the head. Do not remove bowls from the head until the thirds have decided whether they are to be counted. 17. Sarcastic comments or swearing, are not helpful. |
