What a great turn-out to get the bowls club grounds to regain a semblance of normality. A great effort by all.
The overgrowth has been cut back, and our greenkeeper should now be able to get the mower up the path!
Great effort in the Clubhouse, too. The floor has been swept, tables returned to their positions.
Chairs have been brought back from the changing rooms where they have been stored since the flooding.
All that needs to be done now is to hang the pictures back on the walls, and it should look fairly normal.

We have learned that Michael Barnard passed away suddenly on 14th January.
Mick came to Stanton Clubhouse, along with his wife, Val, from the Manor Bowls Club.
He was a good club member, and skipped for us whenever possible.
Eventually Mick, and a few other members, went to play for Shaftesbury Bowls Club in Long Eaton as it was more convenient.
His funeral will be held at 2.30pm on Friday 9th February at the Trent Valley Crematorium, Aston on Trent.

Unfortunately, we have to begin the year with some sad news: Denise, Brian Moult's wife, has died today.
She had suffered various health problems recently, but she did come to the green to watch a bowls match in 2023 and it was lovely to see her.
The Funeral will be held at Bramcote Crematorium at 11am on Monday 29th January.

Saturday 25th November
The Club held its Presentation Night at the Equalized Club in Stapleford.
Beryl and David had organised it, and had hired the back room, which was a good size for the number of people who attended (about 35).
Tom led proceedings and John tested our knowledge with a quiz to start off the evening.
This was followed by Tom and Mick presenting the trophies that had been won during the season by those entering competitions.
The Equalized Club had provided the buffet, which was so generous that we ended up giving some of it away and handing out doggy bags.
For the remaining time, we were entertained by Christine, Kevin and Brian, with their singing and playing of popular songs.
And of course, once the raffle had been drawn, it was time to go home, and clear up.

Thursday 9th November
We have learned today that Alan Hunt passed away on Sunday 5th November 2023.
Alan was a member of the Club for 20 years, and held the posts of Captain and Treasurer during that time.
Alan enjoyed playing bowls and was willing to play whenever he was required.
He did a good job of steering the Club through the time of the pandemic, ensuring that it kept going and retaining membership.
He leaves his widow, Janice, who is also a member of our Club, and a daughter, Lynn.

Thursday 26th October
A few of the long-standing members of the club attended John Kidd's funeral to pay our respects.
Unfortunately, the weather prevented us from spending much time with John's friends and family.
But - as is normal at funerals - we learned a lot about John's life and he was a remarkable man.

Tuesday 3rd October
We have learned today of the sad news that John Kidd has died.
John joined the club, along with Jim and Walter (who have also died this year), when their club in Derby closed.
John was a valued committee member and handyman, and was always willing to lend a hand.
He enjoyed his bowls, and continued to play short-mat bowls in the winter season.
John also initiated and looked after our website, and was great help when he handed the responsibility over,
always willing to help with any problems and to offer tips.
He also helped in organising the competitions.
He and his wife Janet (who died some years ago), had a pact to give up bowls when they reached 80,
so John was a big loss to the club when he decided the time had come to leave.

Sunday 17th September
Once again, the weather held for our end-of-season President's Day.
We played 3 sets of 6 ends (18 ends in all), and all enjoyed the day.
We had a couple of guests playing for us:
Maggie from the u3a (who use the rink twice a month during the season),
and Ben who is our liaison for the site's development (check the News page to see how this is progressing).
Afterwards we enjoyed tea and biscuits, organised by Beryl with help from Janice.
Tom, as President, then presented the winning team and runners-up with their prizes.
He also showed his appreciation to those people who play key roles in keeping the club running smoothly.
Thanks to Tom for organising the day.

Wednesday 13th September
Tom, Keith and Christine attended Walter Dakin's funeral at Markeaton Crematorium.
Thankfully the sun shone, and it was a lovely service for a lovely man.
We were very pleased to see Ernie Brown, there, too. It was Ernie who introduced him to the pleasure of playing bowls
and the two of them were members of Stanton Clubhouse Bowls Club for quite a number of years.

We now have the final results from the Ilkeston Bowling Association.
We are just one above Zingari, who are the bottom of the league, having only joined it this year.
This is not a good position if we compare it to last year's table.
Things can only get better - onwards and upwards for 2024 - let's make our centenary year a good one!

Tuesday 29th August
After a week of no league games, plenty of club competitions have been underway.
Now that 'Skegness Week' is over, we have the two final league games to play.
Tonight's game was a Home IBA game against Heanor Excelsior - and we won on all four rinks!
Well done, everyone!

Wednesday 16th August
A Home IBA match against Rutland.
It is understood that matches in August usually start at 6pm rather than 6.30pm due to fading light towards the end of the game.
All our players arrived in good time. However, most of Rutland's players were late arriving.
Keith Harrison, the captain, refused to come to the Pavilion to sort out the cards.
When our captain shouted that it was a 6pm start, John Overton shouted loudly that it was 6.30pm.
Other exchanges took place, but the overall feeling was that of aggression from Mr Overton, which we all agreed was unnecessary.
Most of our club felt like not playing the match, but the rules state that late-comers are allowed 20 minutes.
In the event the match was played. John Overton played against Bob - he apologised to Bob and they shook hands.
It's a pity that Mr Overton didn't see fit to stand on the green and apologise to the rest of out club, who he'd succeeded in upsetting.
But - sweet revenge - we won the match!

An Away Derbys Fed game against Long Eaton Town.
It was a very windy evening and the rain clouds gathered, but it managed to hold off until we had finished playing.
We won on two rinks and lost on two, but we won the game overall by 7 shots - well done.

Thursday 10th August
A lovely balmy evening for playing bowls on West Park. It was an Away Derbys Federation game against Shaftesbury.
Unfortunately, we had to play one short, so one rink played two against three.
We had two winning rinks and two that lost, but we lost the game overall by 6 shots.

Monday 7th August
An Away IBA match against Heanor Town, and now we are in to 6pm starts.
Quite a nice evening for playing, although we had the soundtrack of the sit-on mower accompanying us throughout the game
as the groundsman did his work on the adjacent sports field.
We lost a reasonably close game of 75 to 60 points, with one winning rink, and a draw on another.

A re-arranged Away IBA match against Victoria Park (the original game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch).
Well, the rain kept away and it was a balmy evening. Some of us found the green a little tricky, and we unfortunately lost the game.

An Away IBA game against Heanor Miners Welfare, where we suffered the greatest loss of the season: 107 (HMW)/34 (SCBC), losing on all four rinks.
Obviously, the Home team knew their green really well.

We played Away at Castle Donington for a Derbys Federation match.
Despite winning on two rinks, we lost the match overall.

Monday 24th July
We arrived at West Park for our Away IBA game against Zingari.
First impressions of the green were not favourable, but although it needed mowing it wasn't as heavy as it looked.
Surprisingly, we didn't have as much trouble reaching as we did the last time we played there, and we won the game! Well done team.

The post about Jim Burrows will be removed from the Home page of this website in due course,
so it is only right that there is a note here about his funeral.
Jim was 88 years of age when he died. He had been a stalwart of Stanton Clubhouse Bowls Club,
joining us more than 20 years ago from a Derby club that had closed.
He was a great handyman, and a significant committee member, taking on the role of Protection Officer,
and introducing his grandchildren to the sport.
In recent years, ill-health had prevented him from being a member of the club
and we have missed his gentle instruction and bowling skill on the green.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The funeral was held at 11.30 am, at Trent Valley Crematorium, Aston on Trent.
Family flowers only, and donations to the RNLI, as Jim had a great affiliation to the sea, having been a keen sea fisherman.
The bowls community was very well represented at the funeral, with retired members of Stanton Clubhouse members there,
and members of other clubs, too.

However, due to dreadful downpours in the afternoon, the green was soaked and bowled very heavily. Not many of us could reach.

Unfortunately, due to other commitments and unforeseen circumstances, we couldn't put out a full team for the one game we had fixed for this week,
which was an IBA Away game against Rutland. Consequently, one team had to play two against three. They weren't the only rink that lost, though, so overall we lost the game.

Sunday 25th June - Memorial Day
This is the day we remember past members, who have died or are suffering in some way.
It is one of the three in-house occasions throughout the season when we play on a Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately, this wasn't very well attended, but we managed to put out a couple of rinks of trips playing two woods as it was quite hot.
The three trophies were won by (1) Mick Davies; (2) Andrew Wright; (3) Keith Worthington.

On a very warm evening, we played a Home Derbys Federation game against Castle Donington.
Holiday time meant some of our experienced players were not available, leaving our newest members to take on more responsibility - a good experience perhaps (?).

On what started out as a lovely sunny evening, the chill soon descended;
thankfully not quite as cold as Monday.
Nevertheless, we unfortunately lost our Away IBA game to Heanor Excelsior.
We have to take comfort in that they do have some very good bowlers - and, it transpires,
they have a roll-up 3 times a week, so they know their green very well.

The green is looking in tip-top condition due to the spring renovation work carried out by our greenkeeper.

Sunday 18th September 2022 - President's Day & end of outdoor season
There had been some uncertainty about this date latterly, due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, RIP.
Once the state funeral date had been confirmed, we were able to go ahead as planned.
And, as in previous years, the weather was kind to us and we had an enjoyable afternoon to end our bowls season.
Tom took the opportunity to thank those people who had been occupied with various tasks that keep the club ticking over, and he expressed his appreciation.

A re-jigged afternoon of fun on our green.
The four team captains who had entered teams for the original whole-day tournament were invited to bring their teams along and play in the afternoon.
Some substitutions were made at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, but everyone had a good time.
Beryl did a wonderful job of providing the tea afterwards, and it was great to see everyone helping to clear up at the end.

Well, we seem to be back on form, after our week away from playing league games.
This was our final Home fixture: IBA against Heanor Excelsior - and we won!

"Skegness Week" - 22nd-27th August
Well, this came and went and club members took advantage and played some of their competitions.
Some people have felt busier than if we had league fixtures!
As for Skegness, I think they were 'rained-off' on Thursday, so they had to play catch-up with their competitions.

Monday 15th August
We played a Derbys Federation game away at Long Eaton Town.
Once again, the heat had affected the green, so it was running fast, and it was challenging to find the runs.
We did our best, but lost the game overall.

Thursday 11th August
This was the first time we had played on West Park, Long Eaton this year. It was a Derbys Federation Away game against Shaftesbury.
When we arrived, there was hardly any grass to be seen, and our bowls were covered in dust when it came to play.
Temperatures had reached 30C during the day, so it was a very warm evening and it was like bowling indoors.
Unfortunately, the home players managed to work out the lay of the land better than we did, and we lost the game.

Monday 8th August
A lovely warm evening spent playing an Away IBA game at Heanor Town. It was good to see Chris Gregory, one of our old members.
Something must have been working in our favour, because we won the match! Well done everyone.

Thursday 28th July
After some uncertainty about whether this was a Home match or Away, it was decided that Castle Donington would come to our green for the Derbys Federation game.
On a warm, muggy evening, we won!

As the Enterprise Club had closed at the end of June, this left the Enterprise Bowls Club without a green.
So we played their 'Home' IBA game on our green - and we won.

The Stanton Clubhouse team of 4: Bob, Keith, Tom & Jes played their County Semi-Final at Long Eaton Town against 4 from Stute.
Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful.

We played our Home Derbys Fed game against Long Eaton Town and won!
It was a much cooler evening than we have experienced of late, but pleasant nevertheless.

Another lovely evening for playing bowls. However, we lost our Home EBF game against Rutland.

An away IBA game against Stute on a beautifully warm summer evening. We were all doing quite well to start with, but unfortunately ended up losing.

Friday 8th July
Although the game against Long Eaton Town was cancelled due to most of their club going down with Covid, a Derbys County EBA competition was played on our green.
Stanton Clubhouse were playing a quarter-final competition against Long Eaton Town players (who hadn't got Covid), and they won 22:9!!
Our team consisted of Bob as lead, Jes 2nd, Dave Marshall 3rd and Keith skipping.
They were supported from the sidelines by a handful of enthusiastic club members. Well done lads - a great result.

Friday 1st July
Dave Parnham's funeral at Bramcote Crematorium.
There were 7 representatives from Stanton Clubhouse, as well as from other clubs that Awsworth played in the leagues.
The funeral was held in the large Serenity Chapel and it was full to capacity, so hopefully Jayne would have felt very supported.

Monday 27th June
A home IBA game against Heanor Miners Welfare - and we won! Let's continue this winning streak.
It was a lovely evening, weather-wise, too.
Also, because of a County competition being played, it was the first time we had tried out rink 5 on white settings - not easy, by all accounts.

Wednesday 15th June - see Update below
We should have been playing a home game against Enterprise Bowls Club this evening.
However, the Enterprise Club was itself holding a meeting and all members were advised to attend. This resulted in our match being postponed.
Instead, the team that should have been playing went to our green for a roll-up. It had been a lovely day weather-wise,
and the evening was very pleasant, too, so a good time was had by all.
UPDATE: The Enterprise Club meeting concluded by informing its members that it would be closing permanently from the end of June 2022.

His funeral will be held at Bramcote Crematorium at 2pm on Friday 1st July 2022;
the wake afterwards will be held at Awsworth Bowls Club Pavilion.

Wednesday 8th June
Our run of wins came to an end tonight when we lost an IBA game away to Heanor Excelsior.
It was a tricky green, which the home team obviously knew, but it took us some time to read.
But well done to Beryl's team, which was the only winning rink.

Another win! This time a Home IBA game against Awsworth. We played 'short-ways' as the green was quite heavy from the recent rain.
Let's hope this run of skilled playing carries on ...

Tuesday 31st May
Our first Friendly match away against Beeston - the club off Central Avenue, not 'the other one' (Unity, Broadgate Park).
It started out as a lovely afternoon, but we were soon dodging showers, some quite heavy - resulting in most people dashing for their waterproofs.
We had a break for tea and biscuits, and did quite well on the raffle, too.
Then it was out again to finish the game. Another shower to endure, but we finished dry. And we won the game!
Beeston will visit us for a return match on Wednesday 7th September.

Our first IBA (Ilkeston Bowling Association) game, and this was against Stute on our green. And we won! Well done to all concerned.
The down side was that the greenkeeper had put a feed on the grass, which came off onto the bowls and made the bowling very heavy.
We'll have to ensure that feeding the green doesn't coincide with a home game in future.

Monday 23rd May
Our second visit from the Ilkeston u3a group. This is run by Kevin McKay, who has joined us this year.
Also, John Rollisson and Andrew Wright have joined us from bowling with the u3a last year.
There are some newly-interested people in this group, so there could be more potential new club members - we'll wait and see.

We had our first visit from the Ilkeston branch of the u3a for a 2-hour bowls session. It was a lovely afternoon, which made it very enjoyable.
There were some people who were trying out bowls for the first time, too, so we hope to see them again at future sessions.

Our first league match - an EBF game against Shaftesbury at our green. It played well, albeit slightly bumpy on red settings long-ways.
Everyone played to the best of their ability, but unfortunately we lost by 1 shot. Shame.

Sunday 1st May
Today we held our first Club game of the season. We played three lots of six ends; for each set we pulled out which rink, team and position we were playing.
It was a good way to play to include the new members so that they could learn how each position plays. It also mixed up players, enabling us to socialise.
It was great to see so many new faces, and to know that they were enjoying playing.

Saturday 23rd April
The green opened in the afternoon, and was well-attended. Both existing and new members came for a roll-up.
The weather was kind, if rather windy, but a good time was had by all.
The work carried out by Simon Hardman, our new greenkeeper, as well as the mowing done by a handful of members, has improved the condition of the green greatly.
It was a pleasure to bowl on it - particularly after last year!

2022
Almost time for the green to open!
We have found a new greenkeeper, who is advising and working on the green and improving its condition - it does look so much better.
In addition, we have recently held our annual pre-season coffee morning,
where members were able to collect their fixture cards and pay subscription fees.
It looks as if some persuasion has led to us enrolling some new members this year (see the list under 'Information for members'),
which will help enormously with us being able to put out teams when we play in the league games (hopefully).

Sunday 5th September 2021
The Trevor Harris Memorial Tournament
12 teams played throughout the day with the overall winners being a team from the Stute Bowls Club.
Congratulations to them, and to the runners-up. They each received a cash prize,
and the winners were also presented with a shield, fashioned by David Fewkes specially for the occasion.
The prizes were presented by Trevor's widow, Diane, and his daughter Ann-Marie also came along to enjoy the day.
Elaine Haddon-Holmes played in the runners-up team, but was also in attendance as
President of Derbyshire English Women's Bowling Federation.
The weather was beautiful - obviously Trevor had put in the order in good time (!).
Beryl Fewkes, and her daughters Tracey and Jean, organised the catering and kept us fed and watered.
So thanks must go to them; it's not easy on a hot day.
Thanks to all those who brought raffle prizes - and there were plenty - and well done to those who won them.
A big thank you must go to Graham Spencer, who gave his time, expertise and good humour to the day.
It set the tone and our club has learned a lot about organising such an event.
Finally, thanks to all those teams who took part - we couldn't have done it without you!
PS - you will find the pictures from the day under the Photos tab
